The earth speaks

The earth speaks

PIER GIORGIO DI CICCO

Images and images, of rushing tides,
and imagined swallowed islands, of the
earth’s wobbled axis, of the flat hand of the
earth patting itself to wake conscience;

of nuclear tests that rock
the cradle, of the awakened sleep
of a hundred countries to care for what
could not be cared about under one’s nose--
the thought of death coming to anyone,
finally personal, while the thought of joy
starves in the streets.

This is the planet about to wonder
of itself; blood and wars measured against
the galactic random, wondering if cosmic
will speaks to earthly wishes;
what have we owed, that we have not paid up?
What is the debt of love?
And how many cruelties have answered
this many prayers?

Each death, unheard, has been the heart’s casualty,
which now the earth makes public.

Pier Giorgio di Cicco is Toronto’s poet laureate—this poem appeared in the Toronto Star January 16, 2005 Section D9 as Pier’s heartfelt response to the Dec 26, 2004 Tsunami.
When this poem was written, Pier was unaware of Bryan and Bryan’s Jan 3 2005 discerned message on the recent tsunami’s connection to nuclear testing. Bryan discerned that this poet has a special God given gift to connect with the truth and express it through poetry. Thank you Pier for using your gift to help give mankind truth.
